Tama Gucci - Almost Blue (After Hours Deluxe)

Words: Eerie Rose

Tama Gucci’s genre-blending sound evokes a sense of freedom in all who listen. His music sounds like one of those nights you know you’ll always remember; nostalgic…the smell of smoke machines and spirits. You know that feeling - you’re out at a club, brain whirling with emotions and thoughts from the day, and a song comes on that just feels right. The lyrics capture the feelings you’re experiencing, and the beat just connects with you in a way that means you just have to dance…you move, the weight of whatever it is that you’re carrying feeling lighter in the dark room, as if the hoard of other moving bodies are bearing that baggage with you.

Originally gaining a cult following after covering pop songs online, the New York City based musician released the EP “Almost Blue” in 2021, which received widespread praise. Lyrics are deeply passionate and emotional, layered over club beats that combine elements of techno-pop, R&B, and electronic music, exploring modern queer romance, longing and loss in a way that is truly experimental and unique. Ultimately, this combination is something profoundly queer - these influences, combinations of genre, heavy emotions leading to deep talks in the smoking area while a techno set plays…are all things we find naturally blending in the queer underground scene. This is familiar territory to us: it’s home. I think that is what personally captivated me so much about Tama Gucci - we’re truly at a point where popstars are part of our communities, people that have lived our lives and know our stories. It fills me with an overwhelming joy to think that the next generation will grow up with so many more openly LGBTQIA+ artists, as people like Tama Gucci break out of the underground and receive the universal attention they so deserve.

After the success of his first EP, Tama Gucci is bringing the people what they want with a new remix EP, “Almost Blue (After Hours Deluxe)” out on 27th September via Sinderlyn. The EP features remixes by Autow Nite Superstore, Swami Sound, Phyzical Trax, Indigo Heaven, Peter Fonda and SONIKKU, whose new take on Tama’s “Show Me” has already been released and can be listened to here. "The updated tracks on the Almost Blue deluxe are everything I want to play in the club with remixes by my favorite artists right now," notes Tama Gucci of the new project. And, of the new remix, SONIKKU says, “I love dance music that is kinda sad but also makes you wanna move so I took the remix in a sort of T.a.T.u meets Kaskade direction. I played around with the vocal pitch and distorted the drums to make it sound warped and clashed nicely with the cold and clean sounding synths.” The EP also features a cover of Britney Spears '“Toxic.”

Tama Gucci’s recently released Britney Spears “I'm A Slave 4 U”-inspired visual for his breakout single and dance floor anthem, “Challenge.” Directed by Jonathan Qualtere.

“Almost Blue (After Hours Deluxe)” releases on 27th September. You can keep up to date and follow Tama Gucci on instagram, twitter, Spotify and Soundcloud.
