Grandmas House - Anything For You
Words: Eerie Rose
Released on April 11th via Duchess Box Records, Anything For You is the highly anticipated EP from Bristol based punk rock band Grandmas House. Opting for a third EP rather than a debut album, the band have grown in many ways since the release of their previous body of work Who Am I, evolving stylistically as well as adding a new member to the original trio.
"We added an extra guitar during recording, and suddenly our sound felt bigger, fuller. We didn't want to lose that energy live, so asking Polly to join was an easy decision. She's an incredible guitarist and a perfect fit for us. Our sound feels more dynamic and free than ever before."
Anything For You certainly does feel fuller, more fleshed out - the added guitar truly elevates the sound, amplifying the heaviness that we associate so much with Grandmas House. But it’s not just the sound that has grown up, if you will, with this record - featuring previously released singles such as Screw It Up, Slaughterhouse, From the Gods and Haunt Me, the band have certainly released their most emotionally charged and vulnerable music to date. Written at a time when the band were all facing loss in different ways, the EP has a strong narrative thread exploring grief in all it’s forms, be it losing loved ones, relationships breaking down, or missing life before illness. The finality of grief, the piercing pain of it’s permanence is felt so palpably in songs like Haunt Me: “Watched the sun come up without your hand to hold, I will never get to see you growing old.” The lyricism is so poignant, however the band remain true to the gritty, punk sound and defiant attitude they are known so well for - but this time, using it to work through and understand loss, channelling the anger and frustration into a perfectly formed set of songs that truly showcase their talent not just as musicians but as artists, laying their hearts out still beating for us to inspect.
If this EP is anything to go by, Grandmas House are more than ones to watch. This is a band to consume, to indulge in, to devour. This set of songs are so specific in their feeling and yet universal, emotions that are so raw and human that they will pull a response from you both now, and in a decade’s time. It’s a beautiful moment of maturity in the band’s discography, and bodes well for any future of a full album. Anything For You is a hand to hold whilst you scream, a duvet to wipe your tears into, and a call to arms to get up and keep fighting.
