Neuro Placid - Nice to Meet Ya
Words: Eerie Rose
Neuro Placid is back with the latest single, ‘Nice to Meet Ya,’ another humorous yet introspective track. 5.18 has been following the progression of the solo project by musician Ollie Brown since the first single ‘Silly in the Mental’ dropped back in 2023, and like other releases this latest saga continues the world building and character analysis of alter ego Neuro Placid. We’ve seen him presented as a sort of anti-hero through references to A Clockwork Orange’s Alex DeLarge in ‘Silly in the Mental’, struggling with drugs and the way they interact with today’s social culture in ‘MDMA’, and battling violent expectations from others in ‘Talking Like a Supervillain’. The thing that is most unique about Neuro Placid as a project is the openness with which Brown tackles such personal issues, many of which would be perceived as a negative way to present yourself to the world. Through the lens of Neuro he is able to present complex ideas of self worth, identity and belonging with a candour you don’t often see from artists, who often whilst wanting to dive into their personal experiences and issues still want to present themselves as ‘good’ overall.
‘Nice to Meet Ya’ was written in lockdown, after experiencing a band breakup and both romantic and platonic relationship turbulence. It tackles a deep unwillingness to meet and grow with new people, a bitterness at times changing and a reluctance to move on. It’s a feeling we can all relate to. Acting as an unenthusiastic greeting to anyone new trying to enter his life, the track has a humorous edge when combined with the fact that as a musician there is no escape from collaboration and meeting new people, and when seeing Neuro Placid live, it’s very clear that this dreaded event has occurred more than once in order to form the band he now plays with. It’s classic Neuro Placid - cheeky, ironic, on-the-nose but tackling feelings many of us would push aside or bury on account of being to awkward or uncomfortable to address.
Having just completed an interview with Bands Go Birdwatching and On The Move via Islington Radio, plus live shows at The Old Blue Last, Paper Dress Vintage and The Windmill Brixton, Neuro Placid is very much on the move at the minute and worth keeping your eye on, with unmissable live energy. ‘Nice to Meet Ya,’ is another great release in a lineup of incredibly strong singles, with a clearly defined sound that suggests there is lots more where these came from.
