Neuro Placid - MDMA

Words: Eerie Rose

Unafraid to stray from the more well-known sound of the Brixton Windmill (which don’t get me wrong, we do love), Neuro Placid brings a fresh and unique vibe to South London’s alternative scene that combines elements of rap, old school hip hop, hardcore and punk, spitting punchy lyrical flow to the backing of a live band. His diverse range of influences is clear, and feels enjoyably authentic. It’s hard not to be somewhat charmed by Ollie Brown’s dedication to the character, and salesmanship when it comes to promotion and on stage energy. If you didn’t know who Neuro Placid was already, trust me, you soon will, and will probably buy a t-shirt to boot.

Following the catchy ‘Silly in the Mental’, the latest release ‘MDMA’ takes us on a slightly deeper and darker journey into the Neuro Placid universe, exploring the horror movie overdose that created this alter ego. Lyrics tackle the serious reality of drug culture, all through the sharp and humour-edged lens that is so specific to his writing. Quips such as: “I quit using drugs for good, now I’m using them for evil,” and “I told him I was in a bad place, but it’s alright ‘cause mentally I’m fine - I’m just living in the UK,” really capture a sense of the witty, villainous character Neuro Placid is, while groovy bass, ska-inspired synths and even a guitar solo come together to form a hypnotic track that feels almost like tumbling through the rooms of a house party, sometime around 3am, picking up on bits of music from different rooms, snippets of conversations with different people blending into each other as the hallways spin and the staircase warps, but in a way that is more fun and messy than outright scary. MDMA is a drug-fuelled nightmare, but a funky one - I hope the ambulance is quick, but - let’s finish listening to this one song first.

‘MDMA’ is available now on all streaming platforms. Listen here on Spotify.
