Gen and the Degenerates - Favourite Jumper
Words: Eerie Rose Press Shot: Derek Bremner with thanks to Marshall Records & Yes Please!
One of my favourite things about indie art-punk trio Gen and the Degenerates is their ability to make fun, upbeat, energetic tracks that speak on important issues in a way that is entertaining and leaves a sweet taste in your mouth after listening. New single ‘Favourite Jumper’ is arguably one of the most developed on this theme, pushing the band into a significantly more pop sounding area, whilst touching on themes of bi-erasure and the way that the current rise of fascism has an agenda for women to be quiet, virtuous and discreet about their desire.
“We see this reflected in rhetoric around bisexual women settling down with men and almost relinquishing their queerness to try and feel safer. I think this is the perfect time to rebel against that and be as slutty and queer as possible. And so this is really just a fun party song of sorts, from the point of view of a bisexual person (guess what-it’s me), discussing previous experiences in a fun way, but also attempting to reconcile an honest and healthy relationship with a partner, with the totality of that sexuality and sexual history,” lyricist Genevieve Glynn-Reeves says of the concept for the song.
After a successful debut album run with their first record, ‘ANTI-FUN PROPOGANDA’, which saw them break into both Europe and the US, Gen and the Degenerates are currently back on the road supporting Hyphen on a tour around the UK. This new track and live show run sparks a new era for the band, and I am very excited to see what is coming for the trio.
